From Epano Zakros, there is a path down to the "Ravine of the Dead" (Kilada tou Nekron), so named because the caves in the gorge were used for burials in the Early and Middle Minoan periods. The spectacular gorge, one of the most beautiful of all Crete, follows the river that flows into the bay at Kato Zakros and has a large variety of flora and fauna. (Especially in spring, the gorge may be impassable because of sudden floods.) The path through the gorge is about 8 km long. After a walk of 2 to 2.5 hours you will reach its end at the Minoan palace of Zakros.
